Comprehend the Hand Values in Baccarat

Learn the values of baccarat hands by adhering to a few basic rules. Finding the value of a baccarat hand is simple once you know how.

Values of Baccarat Cards

The following list of baccarat card values is helpful to know before going on to comprehend baccarat hand values.

The Ace is worth 1.
The 2 is worth 2 - the actual value shown, as are all the numbered cards through the number 9.
The 10 is worth zero.
The Jack is worth zero.
The Queen is worth zero.
The Kind is worth zero.

The suit of a card has no bearing at all in baccarat.  Since the shoe of six or eight packs is often used to play the game, the same numbers may appear multiple times.

The objective of Baccarat

It makes no difference in baccarat whether players wager on the player hand or the dealer.  On the hand they believe will win, the player makes a wager.  In baccarat, the hand with the closest number to nine wins.  There are only two hands dealt in American baccarat.  The number of players in the game makes no difference.  The "player hand" is one of these hands, and the "banker hand" is the other.

Baccarat Hand Values

Even though the process used to calculate baccarat hand values is a little out of the ordinary, with a little explanation, it becomes very clear.  A few examples will follow the explanation to make sure you understand the process of adding up the values of a baccarat hand.  The caller will make sure the game is played correctly, but it is still crucial for all players to know how the values of the baccarat hands are determined.  The shoe is frequently passed between players while they alternate dealing the cards in various games.  It is crucial to become knowledgeable about baccarat hand values just for this reason.

The player will have to pass the shoe to the next player and skip their turn if they don't.

Using the values mentioned under Baccarat Card Values above, the values of the cards are added together.  In the event that the total exceeds nine, say fourteen, ten is deducted, or to put it another way, the tens digit is removed, leaving the total, which in this case would be four.

Examples of Baccarat Hand Additions

The total amount counted for different combinations of dealt baccarat hands is displayed in the following examples.

Even though these numbers are different, they add up to the same in baccarat:
Ace + 2 = 3
5 + 8 = 13, (drop the "ten") which equals 3

2 + 3 = 5
9 + 6 = 15, (drop the "ten") which equals 5

3 + 5 = 8
9 + 9 = 18, (drop the "ten") which equals 8

Jack + Ace = 1 (because the 10, Jack and other picture cards equal zero)
7 + 4 = 11, (drop the "ten") which equals 1

The following are examples of hands that are equal to 9.  This is called a natural and  would be the winning hand:
6 + 3 = 9
5 + 4 = 9
9 + Jack = 9

These simple examples demonstrate how to add up the values of a baccarat hand by adding just two cards together.  A hand may occasionally be dealt more than two cards.  When this happens, proceed in exactly the same manner as previously demonstrated.
